Saul: (a) (d. 877 BCE) A righteous member of the Tribe of Benjamin. Anointed by Samuel as the first Israelite king in 880 BCE. When he failed to destroy Amalek as commanded by G-d, Samuel anointed David in his stead. Overcome with jealousy, Saul pursued David until he himself was killed in battle by the Philistines. (b) A common Jewish name.
Michal was elevated to a position of great privilege and earned David's ire by rebuking him for what she considered unbecoming behavior for a monarch.
