Chapter 26

1Of the divisions of the gate sentries: of the Korahites; Meshelemiah the son of Kore of the sons of Asaph.
Of the divisions of the gate sentries: of the Korahites: They do not rotate, but they distributed them according to the gates, and they later cast lots [to determine] who would serve at this gate and who at another gate. In this way it is explained further (verses 13-19).
of the Korahites: Meshelemiah the son of Kore of the sons of Asaph: And [we find] a similarity above (9:19): “And Shallum the son of Kore, etc.”
2And the sons of Meshelemiah: Zechariah the firstborn; Jediael the second, Zebadiah the third, Jathniel the fourth.
3Elam the fifth, Jehohanan the sixth, Eljehoeinai the seventh.
4And the sons of Obed-Edom: Shemaiah the firstborn, Jehozabad the second, Joah the third, and Sachar the fourth, and Nethanel the fifth.
5Ammiel the sixth, Issachar the seventh, Peullethai the eighth, for God had blessed him.
for God had blessed him: as is stated above (13:14): “… and the Lord blessed the house of Obed-Edom, etc.”
6And to Shemaiah his son were born sons who ruled through their father's house, for they were mighty warriors.
who ruled through their father’s house: The meaning is that those ruling were doing so through their father, and a similarity is [found] at the end of Daniel (11:3): “and rule a great dominion (וּמָשַל מִמְשַל רַב).”
7The sons of Shemaiah: Othni, and Raphael, and Obed, Elzabad, his brethren, mighty warriors, Elihu and Semachiah.
8All these are of the sons of Obed-Edom; they and their sons and their brethren, valiant men with strength for service-sixty-two to Obed-Edom.
valiant men: Heb. אִיש חַיִל, not with strength and not in war but like a man about whom someone says, “So-and-so is of high esteem,” and similarly, (Ruth 2:1): “… a mighty man of valor, etc., and his name was Boaz.”
9And the sons of Meshelemiah and brethren valiant men, eighteen.
10And the sons of Hosah of the sons of Merari: Shimri the chief, because although he was not the firstborn, his father made him the chief.
11Hilkiah the second, Tebaliah the third, Zechariah the fourth; all the sons and brethren of Hosah, thirteen.
12To these were the divisions of the gate sentries according to the chiefs of the men, watches corresponding to their brethren, to serve in the House of the Lord.
watches corresponding to their brethren: the chiefs of twenty-four watches.
13And they cast lots, the small like the great, to their fathers' houses, for each gate.
And they cast lots, the small like the great, to their fathers’ houses for each gate: who will receive this gate, and who will receive this gate, to the east, to the west, to the north, to the south, and so to all the gates in the forecourt.
14And the lot to the east fell to Shelemiah, and Zechariah his son, a prudent counselor, cast lots, and his lot came out to the north.
15To Obed-Edom to the south, and to his sons the house of the Asuppim.
16To Shuppim and to Hosah to the west with the Shallecheth Gate on the ascending highway, a watch corresponding to a watch.
17To the east, the Levites were six; to the north every day four, to the south every day four, and to the Asuppim-two each.
and to the Asuppim: a place named Asuppim.
18Toward the outside, to the west; four to the highway, two toward the outside.
Toward the outside: Heb. This is explained in Tractate Tamid (ad loc.): “Said Rava: לַפַּרְבָּר means כְּלַפֵּי בָּר, toward the outside.”
19These are the divisions of the gate sentries of the sons of the Korahites and of the sons of Merari.
20And the Levites: Ahiah over the treasuries of the House of God and to the treasuries of the hallowed things.
And the Levites: Ahiah over the treasuries, etc.: He was appointed over the money with which sacrifices were purchased for the House of God, such as the holy sacrifices (sic).
21The sons of Ladan, the sons of the Gershonites; to Ladan, the chiefs of the fathers' [houses]; to Ladan the Gershonite, Jehieli.
The sons of Ladan: To Ladan the Gershonite was the chief of the fathers, Jehiel. He is Ladan mentioned above (23:7-9).
22The sons of Jehieli: Zetham and Joel his brother over the treasuries of the House of the Lord.
and Joel his brother: The brother of Jehiel, as is written above (23:8): “Jehiel, and Zetham, and Joel.”
over the treasuries of the House of the Lord: There were many treasuries in the forecourt, each treasury for its individual purpose, and over each one was one appointee.
23To the Amramites, to the Izharites, to the Hebronites, to the Uzzielites.
24And Shebuel the son of Gershom, the son of Moses, was the ruler over the treasuries.
And Shebuel the son of Gershom was the ruler over the treasuries: Similarly, [this means] the ruler over one of the treasuries of the forecourt. Others explain [that he was literally] the ruler over the treasuries. All the Temple trustees were under him.
25And his brethren of Eliezer: Rehabiah his son, and Isaiah his son, and Joram his son, and Zichri his son, and Shelomith his son.
26That is Shelomoth and his brethren [who] were over all the treasuries of the hallowed things that King David and the chiefs of the fathers of the princes of the thousands and the hundreds and the generals of the army had hallowed.
27From the wars and from the spoils they hallowed, to strengthen the House of the Lord.
28And all that Samuel the seer, and Saul the son of Kish, and Abner the son of Ner, and Joab the son of Zeruiah had hallowed; all that was hallowed was in the hands of Shelomith and his brethren.
29Of the Izharites: Chenaniah and his sons to the outside work over Israel, of the officers and of the judges.
Of the Izharites: Chenaniah and his sons to the outside work: to the work that was done outside the city, in the forests and in the mountains; to hew cedars and to quarry stones and to plow fields belonging to the Sanctuary.
30Of the Hebronites: Hashabiah and his brethren, valiant men-one thousand and seven hundred, over the appointment of Israel from the side of the Jordan to the west, to all the work of the Lord and to the service of the king.
Of the Hebronites: Hashabiah… to all the work of the Lord: They are the officers over those who did the work of the Lord in trans-Jordan.
and to the service of the king: They were also appointed over the dwellers of the king’s heritage and the king’s treasuries, and so [we find] further (v. 32): “for every matter of God and matter of the king.”
31Of the Hebronites: Iriah the chief of the Hebronites to his generations to the fathers, in the fortieth year of David's reign they were enquired of, and there were found among them mighty warriors in Jazer- Gilead.
to his generations to the fathers in the fortieth year, etc.: And also all these computations were in the fortieth year.
32And his brethren, valiant men-were two thousand seven hundred, the chiefs of the fathers' [houses], and King David appointed them over the Reubenites and the Gadites and half the tribe of the Manasseh, for every matter of God and matter of the king.
