Chapter 12

1Now these are the priests and the Levites who went up with Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel and Jeshua; Seraiah, Jeremiah, Ezra.   אוְאֵ֙לֶּה֙ הַכֹּֽהֲנִ֣ים וְהַֽלְוִיִּ֔ם אֲשֶׁ֥ר עָל֛וּ עִם־זְרֻבָּבֶ֥ל בֶּן־שְׁאַלְתִּיאֵ֖ל וְיֵשׁ֑וּעַ שְׂרָיָ֥ה יִרְמְיָ֖ה עֶזְרָֽא:
and Jeshua: That is Joshua the High Priest.   וישוע: הוא יהושע הכהן הגדול:
2Amariah, Malluch, Hattush.   באֲמַרְיָ֥ה מַלּ֖וּךְ חַטּֽוּשׁ:
3Shechaniah, Rehum, Meremoth.   גשְׁכַנְיָ֥ה רְחֻ֖ם מְרֵמֹֽת:
4Iddo, Ginnethoi, Abijah.   דעִדּ֥וֹא גִנְּת֖וֹי אֲבִיָּֽה:
5Mijamin, Maadiah, Bilgah.   המִיָּמִ֥ין מַֽעַדְיָ֖ה בִּלְגָּֽה:
6Shemaiah and Joiarib, Jedaiah.   ושְׁמַעְיָ֥ה וְיֽוֹיָרִ֖יב יְדַעְיָֽה:
7Sallu, Amok, Hilkiah, Jedaiah. These are the leaders of the priests and their brethren in the days of Jeshua.   זסַלּ֣וּ עָמ֔וֹק חִלְקִיָּ֖ה יְדַעְיָ֑ה אֵ֣לֶּה רָאשֵׁ֧י הַכֹּֽהֲנִ֛ים וַֽאֲחֵיהֶ֖ם בִּימֵ֥י יֵשֽׁוּעַ:
in the days of Jeshua: i.e., those who were leaders in the days of Joshua the High Priest.   בימי ישוע: שהיו ראשים בימי יהושע כהן גדול:
8And the Levites were: Jeshua, Binnui, Kadmiel, Sherebiah, Judah, Mattaniah over the huyedoth, he and his brethren.   חוְהַֽלְוִיִּ֗ם יֵשׁ֧וּעַ בִּנּ֛וּי קַדְמִיאֵ֥ל שֵֽׁרֵבְיָ֖ה יְהוּדָ֣ה מַתַּנְיָ֑ה עַל־הֻיְּד֖וֹת ה֥וּא וְאֶחָֽיו:
huyedoth: [This was] a type of musical instrument which accompanied the songs.   הידות: מן כלי שיר לומר שירה:
9And Bakbukiah and Unni, their brethren, were opposite them in the watches.   טוּבַקְבֻּקְיָ֨ה וְעֻנִּ֧י (כתיב וְעֻנִּ֧ו) אֲחֵיהֶ֛ם לְנֶגְדָּ֖ם לְמִשְׁמָרֽוֹת:
in the watches: as we find (in I Chronicles from ch. 24 on) that the Levites were divided into twenty-four watches.   למשמרות: כמו שמצינו (בדברי הימים א' כ"ד ואילך) שהלוים היו חלוקים לעשרים וארבעה משמרות:
10Now Jeshua begot Joiakim, and Joiakim begot Eliashib, and Eliashib begot Joiada.   יוְיֵשׁ֖וּעַ הוֹלִ֣יד אֶת־יֽוֹיָקִ֑ים וְיֽוֹיָקִים֙ הוֹלִ֣יד אֶת־אֶלְיָשִׁ֔יב וְאֶלְיָשִׁ֖יב אֶת־יוֹיָדָֽע:
Now Jeshua begot Joiakim, etc.: All those [listed] in this verse were high priests.   וישוע הוליד את יויקים וגו': כל אלו שבמקרא זה היו כהנים גדולים:
11And Joiada begot Jonathan, and Jonathan begot Jaddua.   יאוְיֽוֹיָדָע֙ הוֹלִ֣יד אֶת־יוֹנָתָ֔ן וְיוֹנָתָ֖ן הוֹלִ֥יד אֶת־יַדּֽוּעַ:
12And in the days of Joiakim, the priests, the heads of the fathers' houses, were: of Seraiah was Meraiah; of Jeremiah was Hananiah.   יבוּבִימֵי֙ יֽוֹיָקִ֔ים הָי֥וּ כֹֽהֲנִ֖ים רָאשֵׁ֣י הָאָב֑וֹת לִשְׂרָיָ֣ה מְרָיָ֔ה לְיִרְמְיָ֖ה חֲנַנְיָֽה:
And in the days of Joiakim: who was the high priest. These priests were the leaders of the fathers’ houses of their watches.   ובימי יויקים: שהיה כהן גדול היו כהנים הללו הם היו ראשים ראשי בית אב למשמרותם:
of Seraiah was Meraiah: Of the watch of Seraiah, the head of the father’s house was Meraiah, and of the watch of Jeremiah, the head of the father’s house was Hananiah, and so it is with them all, and the reason Scripture did not list all twenty-four watches is that it is not exacting in enumerating them all.   לשריה מריה: למשמרת של שריה היה מריה ראש בית אב ולמשמרת של ירמיה היה חנניה ראש בית אב וכן כולם ואת אשר לא פירש כל העשרי' וארבע משמרות לא דקדק המקרא בכך למנותם כולם:
13Of Ezra was Meshullam; of Amariah was Jehohanan.   יגלְעֶזְרָ֣א מְשֻׁלָּ֔ם לַֽאֲמַרְיָ֖ה יְהֽוֹחָנָֽן:
14Of Melicu was Jonathan; of Shebaniah was Joseph.   ידלִמְלִ֙יכוּ֙ (כתיב לִמְלִ֙וכיּ֙) יֽוֹנָתָ֔ן לִשְׁבַנְיָ֖ה יוֹסֵֽף:
15Of Harim was Adna; of Meraioth was Helkai.   טולְחָרִ֣ם עַדְנָ֔א לִמְרָי֖וֹת חֶלְקָֽי:
16Of Iddo was Zechariah; of Ginnethon was Meshullam.   טזלְעִדּ֥וֹא (כתיב לְעִדֹּ֥יא) זְכַרְיָ֖ה לְגִנְּת֥וֹן מְשֻׁלָּֽם:
17Of Abijah was Zichri; of Minjamin, of Moadiah was Piltai.   יזלַֽאֲבִיָּ֖ה זִכְרִ֑י לְמִ֨נְיָמִ֔ין לְמֽוֹעַדְיָ֖ה פִּלְטָֽי:
18Of Bilgah was Shammua; of Shemaiah was Jehonathan.   יחלְבִלְגָּ֣ה שַׁמּ֔וּעַ לִשְׁמַעְיָ֖ה יְהוֹנָתָֽן:
19Of Joiarib was Mattenai; of Jedaiah was Uzzi.   יטוּלְיֽוֹיָרִ֣יב מַתְּנַ֔י לִֽידַעְיָ֖ה עֻזִּֽי:
20Of Sallai was Kallai; of Amok was Eber.   כלְסַלַּ֥י קַלַּ֖י לְעָמ֥וֹק עֵֽבֶר:
21Of Hilkiah was Hashabiah; of Jedaiah was Nethanel.   כאלְחִלְקִיָּ֣ה חֲשַׁבְיָ֔ה לִֽידַעְיָ֖ה נְתַנְאֵֽל:
22The Levites in the days of Eliashib; Joiada, and Johanan, and Jaddua were inscribed as the heads of the fathers' houses, and so were the priests in the reign of Darius the Persian.   כבהַֽלְוִיִּם֩ בִּימֵ֨י אֶלְיָשִׁ֜יב יֽוֹיָדָ֚ע וְיֽוֹחָנָן֙ וְיַדּ֔וּעַ כְּתוּבִ֖ים רָאשֵׁ֣י אָב֑וֹת וְהַכֹּ֣הֲנִ֔ים עַל־מַלְכ֖וּת דָּֽרְיָ֥וֶשׁ הַפַּֽרְסִֽי:
The Levites in the days of Eliashib: These Levites were the heads of the fathers’ houses in the watches of the Levites in the days of Eliashib the High Priest, and the priests enumerated immediately above were the heads of the fathers’ houses in their watches, also in the days of Eliashib.   הלוים בימי אלישיב: הלוים הללו היו ראשי בית אבות במשמרות הלוים בימי אלישיב הכהן הגדול והכהנים המנוין למעלה בסמוך הם היו ראשי בית אבות במשמרותם גם בימי אלישיב:
in the reign of: This matter came about in the days of Darius.   על מלכות: בימי מלכות דריוש היה דבר זה:
23The children of Levi, the heads of the fathers' houses, were inscribed in the book of chronicles even until the days of Johanan the son of Eliashib.   כגבְּנֵ֚י לֵוִי֙ רָאשֵׁ֣י הָֽאָב֔וֹת כְּתוּבִ֕ים עַל־סֵ֖פֶר דִּבְרֵ֣י הַיָּמִ֑ים וְעַד־יְמֵ֖י יֽוֹחָנָ֥ן בֶּן־אֶלְיָשִֽׁיב:
even until the days of Johanan: All those who were the heads of the fathers’ houses of the Levites until the days of Johanan the High Priest were enumerated in the chronicles.   ועד ימי יוחנן: כל אותן שהיו ראשי אבות הלוים עד ימי יוחנן כהן גדול מנוין שם בדברי הימים:
24And the heads of the Levites were: Hashabiah, Sherebiah, and Jeshua the son of Kadmiel, and their brethren were opposite them to praise [and] to give thanks by the command of David, the man of God, a watch opposite a watch.   כדוְרָאשֵׁ֣י הַֽ֠לְוִיִּם חֲשַׁבְיָ֨ה שֵֽׁרֵבְיָ֜ה וְיֵשׁ֚וּעַ בֶּן־קַדְמִיאֵל֙ וַֽאֲחֵיהֶ֣ם לְנֶגְדָּ֔ם לְהַלֵּ֣ל לְהוֹד֔וֹת בְּמִצְוַ֖ת דָּוִ֣יד אִישׁ־הָֽאֱלֹהִ֑ים מִשְׁמָ֖ר לְעֻמַּ֥ת מִשְׁמָֽר:
a watch opposite a watch: for they were divided into their watches to recite the song.   משמר לעומת משמר: שהיו חלוקים במשמרותם לומר שירה:
25Mattaniah and Bakbukiah, Obadiah, Meshullam, Talmon, and Akkub were guards, sentries of the gates [in their] watch at the thresholds of the gates.   כהמַתַּנְיָ֧ה וּבַקְבֻּֽקְיָ֛ה עֹֽבַדְיָ֥ה מְשֻׁלָּ֖ם טַלְמ֣וֹן עַקּ֑וּב שֹֽׁמְרִ֚ים שֽׁוֹעֲרִים֙ מִשְׁמָ֔ר בַּֽאֲסֻפֵּ֖י הַשְּׁעָרִֽים:
sentries of the gates [in their] watch: The sentries of the gates were in their watch to guard the gates of the Temple.   שוערים משמר: שוערים היו במשמר שלהם לשמור שערי הבית:
at the thresholds: Heb. בַּאֲסֻפֵּי, like בְּסִיפֵּי הַשְּׁעָרִים, at the thresholds of the gates.   באסופי: כמו בסיפי השערים:
26These were in the days of Joiakim the son of Jeshua, the son of Jozadak and in the days of Nehemiah the governor and Ezra the priest, the scholar.   כואֵ֕לֶּה בִּימֵ֛י יֽוֹיָקִ֥ים בֶּן־יֵשׁ֖וּעַ בֶּן־יֽוֹצָדָ֑ק וּבִימֵי֙ נְחֶמְיָ֣ה הַפֶּחָ֔ה וְעֶזְרָ֥א הַכֹּהֵ֖ן הַסּוֹפֵֽר:
These were in the days of Joiakim: These were the gate sentries in the days of Joiakim.   אלה בימי יויקים: אלה היו שוערים בימי יויקים:
27And in the dedication of the wall of Jerusalem, they sought the Levites from all their places to bring them to Jerusalem to perform the dedication with joy, and with thanksgivings, and with song, cymbals, psalteries, and with harps.   כזוּבַֽחֲנֻכַּ֞ת חוֹמַ֣ת יְרֽוּשָׁלִַ֗ם בִּקְשׁ֚וּ אֶת־הַלְוִיִּם֙ מִכָּל־מְק֣וֹמֹתָ֔ם לַֽהֲבִיאָ֖ם לִירֽוּשָׁלִָ֑ם לַֽעֲשׂ֨ת חֲנֻכָּ֚ה וְשִׂמְחָה֙ וּבְתוֹד֣וֹת וּבְשִׁ֔יר מְצִלְתַּ֖יִם נְבָלִ֥ים וּבְכִנֹּרֽוֹת:
And in the dedication of the wall of Jerusalem: at the completion of the wall of the city, to sanctify the city.   ובחנוכת חומת ירושלים: בתשלום חומת העיר לקדש את העיר:
and with thanksgivings: Heb. וּבְתוֹדוֹת, and with thanksgivings.   ובתודות: ובהודאות:
28And the sons of the singers gathered and from the plain surrounding Jerusalem, and from the villages of the Netophathites.   כחוַיֵּאָ֣סְפ֔וּ בְּנֵ֖י הַֽמְשֹֽׁרְרִ֑ים וּמִן־הַכִּכָּר֙ סְבִיב֣וֹת יְרֽוּשָׁלִַ֔ם וּמִן־חַצְרֵ֖י נְטֹֽפָתִֽי:
and from the plain: the singers came from [the plain] surrounding Jerusalem.   ומן הככר: אשר סביבות ירושלים באו המשוררים:
29And from the house of Gilgal, and from the fields of Geba and Azmaveth, for the singers built villages for themselves around Jerusalem.   כטוּמִבֵּית֙ הַגִּלְגָּ֔ל וּמִשְּׂד֥וֹת גֶּ֖בַע וְעַזְמָ֑וֶת כִּ֣י חֲצֵרִ֗ים בָּנ֚וּ לָהֶם֙ הַמְשֹׁ֣רְרִ֔ים סְבִיב֖וֹת יְרֽוּשָׁלִָֽם:
30And the priests and the Levites purified themselves, and they purified the people and the gates and the wall.   לוַיִּטַּֽהֲר֔וּ הַכֹּֽהֲנִ֖ים וְהַֽלְוִיִּ֑ם וַיְטַֽהֲרוּ֙ אֶת־הָעָ֔ם וְאֶת־הַשְּׁעָרִ֖ים וְאֶת־הַֽחוֹמָֽה:
purified themselves: First they purified themselves, and afterwards they purified the others.   ויטהרו: תחלה טהרו את עצמן ואח"כ טהרו את אחרים:
and the gates and the wall: that there should be no uncleanliness in the city.   ואת השערים ואת החומה: שלא תהיה טומאה שם בעיר:
31Then I brought up the princes of Judah upon the wall, and I placed two large thanksgiving offerings with processions to the right upon the wall to the Dung Gate.   לאוָאַֽעֲלֶה֙ אֶת־שָׂרֵ֣י יְהוּדָ֔ה מֵעַ֖ל לַחוֹמָ֑ה וָאַֽעֲמִ֡ידָה שְׁתֵּ֣י תוֹדֹת֩ גְּדוֹלֹ֨ת וְתַֽהֲלֻכֹ֚ת לַיָּמִין֙ מֵעַ֣ל לַחוֹמָ֔ה לְשַׁ֖עַר הָֽאַשְׁפֹּֽת:
upon the wall: meaning that he sanctified the city, the princes, the tribunal, and the Levites with two thanksgiving offerings around the city, as is delineated in Tractate Shebuoth (14a, 15a, b), in order to sanctify the city.   מעל לחומה: שקדש את העיר והלכו השרים ובית דין והכהנים והלוים עם שתי תודות סביב לעיר הכל כמפורש במסכת שבועות כדי לקדש את העיר:
two… thanksgiving offerings: two breads of the thanksgiving offerings, each bread being called a thanksgiving offering.   שתי תודות: שתי לחמי תודה כל לחם ולחם קרוי תודה:
with processions to the right: And when they went out of the city in order to encompass it, they went to the right side.   ותהלוכות לימין: וכאשר יצאו מן העיר כדי לסובבה הלכו לצד ימינה:
32And Hoshaiah and half the princes of Judah walked after them.   לבוַיֵּ֚לֶךְ אַֽחֲרֵיהֶם֙ הֽוֹשַׁעְיָ֔ה וַֽחֲצִ֖י שָׂרֵ֥י יְהוּדָֽה:
33And Azariah, Ezra, and Meshullam.   לגוַֽעֲזַרְיָ֥ה עֶזְרָ֖א וּמְשֻׁלָּֽם:
34Judah, and Benjamin, and Shemaiah, and Jeremiah.   לדיְהוּדָה֙ וּבִנְיָמִ֔ן וּשְׁמַעְיָ֖ה וְיִרְמְיָֽה:
Judah and Benjamin: They were two princes.   יהודה ובנימין: שני שרים היו:
35And of the children of the priests with trumpets was Zechariah the son of Jonathan, the son of Shemaiah, the son of Mattaniah, the son of Micaiah, the son of Zaccur, the son of Asaph.   להוּמִבְּנֵ֥י הַכֹּֽהֲנִ֖ים בַּֽחֲצֹֽצְר֑וֹת זְכַרְיָ֨ה בֶן־יֽוֹנָתָ֜ן בֶּן־שְׁמַעְיָ֚ה בֶן־מַתַּנְיָה֙ בֶּן־מִ֣יכָיָ֔ה בֶּן־זַכּ֖וּר בֶּן־אָסָֽף:
36And his brethren: Shemaiah and Azarel, Milalai, Gilalai, Maai, Nethanel, and Judah; Hanani with the musical instruments of David the man of God; and Ezra the scholar was before them.   לווְאֶחָ֡יו שְׁמַעְיָ֡ה וַֽעֲזַרְאֵ֡ל מִֽלֲלַ֡י גִּֽלֲלַ֡י מָעַ֞י נְתַנְאֵ֚ל וִֽיהוּדָה֙ חֲנָ֔נִי בִּכְלֵי־שִׁ֥יר דָּוִ֖יד אִ֣ישׁ הָֽאֱלֹהִ֑ים וְעֶזְרָ֥א הַסּוֹפֵ֖ר לִפְנֵיהֶֽם:
And his brethren: the colleagues of Zechariah the priest.   ואחיו: חביריו של זכריה הכהן:
37And by the Fountain Gate and opposite them they ascended upon the steps of the City of David at the ascent to the wall above the house of David and until the Water Gate eastward.   לזוְעַל֩ שַׁ֨עַר הָעַ֜יִן וְנֶגְדָּ֗ם עָלוּ֙ עַֽל־מַֽעֲלוֹת֙ עִ֣יר דָּוִ֔יד בַּמַּֽעֲלֶ֖ה לַֽחוֹמָ֑ה מֵעַל֙ לְבֵ֣ית דָּוִ֔יד וְעַ֛ד שַׁ֥עַר הַמַּ֖יִם מִזְרָֽח:
And by the Fountain Gate: Before the Fountain Gate, they marched around the city.   ועל שער העין: לפני שער העין הלכו סביבות העיר:
and opposite them: And before them they ascended from the Fountain Gate to the steps of the City of David, and those steps led to the wall.   ונגדם עלו: ולפניהם עלו משער העין למעלות של עיר דוד ואותן מעלות היו לחומה:
38And the second thanksgiving offering, which went opposite [it], and I was after it with half the people upon the wall, above the Tower of the Furnaces, and until the broad wall.   לחוְהַתּוֹדָ֧ה הַשֵּׁנִ֛ית הַֽהוֹלֶ֥כֶת לְמ֖וֹל (כתיב לְמ֖וֹאל) וַֽאֲנִ֣י אַֽחֲרֶ֑יהָ וַֽחֲצִ֨י הָעָ֜ם מֵעַ֣ל לְהַחוֹמָ֗ה מֵעַל֙ לְמִגְדַּ֣ל הַתַּנּוּרִ֔ים וְעַ֖ד הַחוֹמָ֥ה הָרְחָבָֽה:
And the second thanksgiving offering, which went opposite [it]: The other thanksgiving offering, which was second to its fellow, went opposite its fellow, alongside it, not one following the other.   והתודה השנית ההולכת למול: תודה אחרת שהיתה שנית לחברתה היתה הולכת נגד חברתה בשוה ולא זו אחר זו:
and I was after it: And I marched after it, [i.e.,] after the thanksgiving offering.   ואני אחריה: ואני הייתי הולך אחריה של תודה:
39And above the Gate of Ephraim, and until the Yeshanah Gate, and until the Fish Gate, and the Tower of Hananel, and the Tower of the Hundred, and until the Sheep Gate, and they stood in the gate of the guard.   לטוּמֵעַ֣ל לְשַֽׁעַר־אֶ֠פְרַיִם וְעַל־שַׁ֨עַר הַיְשָׁנָ֜ה וְעַל־שַׁ֣עַר הַדָּגִ֗ים וּמִגְדַּ֚ל חֲנַנְאֵל֙ וּמִגְדַּ֣ל הַמֵּאָ֔ה וְעַ֖ד שַׁ֣עַר הַצֹּ֑אן וְעָ֣מְד֔וּ בְּשַׁ֖עַר הַמַּטָּרָֽה:
and they stood: They stood, there and did not go any further.   ועמדו: שם היו עומדים שלא לילך יותר:
40And the two thanksgiving offerings stood in the Temple of God, and I and half the prefects with me.   מוַתַּֽעֲמֹ֛דְנָה שְׁתֵּ֥י הַתּוֹדֹ֖ת בְּבֵ֣ית הָאֱלֹהִ֑ים וַֽאֲנִ֕י וַֽחֲצִ֥י הַסְּגָנִ֖ים עִמִּֽי:
the two thanksgiving offerings: that they carried to the Temple.   שתי התודות: שנשאו אותם לבהמ"ק:
41And the priests, Eliakim, Maaseiah, Minjamin, Micaiah, Eljoenai, Zechariah, and Hananiah with the trumpets.   מאוְהַכֹּ֣הֲנִ֡ים אֶלְיָקִ֡ים מַֽעֲשֵׂיָ֡ה מִ֠נְיָמִין מִֽיכָיָ֧ה אֶלְיֽוֹעֵינַ֛י זְכַרְיָ֥ה חֲנַנְיָ֖ה בַּֽחֲצֹֽצְרֽוֹת:
with the trumpets: They sounded the trumpets out of their joy.   בחצוצרות: היו תוקעין מתוך שמחתן:
42And Maaseiah, and Shemaiah, and Eleazar, and Uzzi, and Jehohanan, and Malchijah, and Elam, and Ezer, and the singers made their voices heard, and Jezrahiah their overseer.   מבוּמַֽעֲשֵׂיָ֨ה וּשְׁמַעְיָ֜ה וְאֶלְעָזָ֧ר וְעֻזִּ֛י וִיהֽוֹחָנָ֥ן וּמַלְכִּיָּ֖ה וְעֵילָ֣ם וָעָ֑זֶר וַיַּשְׁמִ֙יעוּ֙ הַמְשֹׁ֣רְרִ֔ים וְיִזְרַחְיָ֖ה הַפָּקִֽיד:
43And they slaughtered great sacrifices on that day, and they rejoiced, for God made them rejoice with great joy, and also the women and the children rejoiced, and the joy of Jerusalem was heard from afar.   מגוַיִּזְבְּח֣וּ בַיּ֣וֹם הַ֠הוּא זְבָחִ֨ים גְּדוֹלִ֜ים וַיִּשְׂמָ֗חוּ כִּ֚י הָֽאֱלֹהִים֙ שִׂמְּחָם֙ שִׂמְחָ֣ה גְדוֹלָ֔ה וְגַ֧ם הַנָּשִׁ֛ים וְהַיְלָדִ֖ים שָׂמֵ֑חוּ וַתִּשָּׁמַ֛ע שִׂמְחַ֥ת יְרֽוּשָׁלִַ֖ם מֵרָחֽוֹק:
44On that day, men were appointed over the chambers for treasuries for the heave offerings, for the first gifts, and for the tithes, to gather in them from the fields of the cities the portions prescribed by the Torah for the priests and for the Levites, for the rejoicing of Judah was over the priests and over the Levites who stood [ministering].   מדוַיִּפָּֽקְד֣וּ בַיּוֹם֩ הַה֨וּא אֲנָשִׁ֜ים עַל־הַנְּשָׁכ֗וֹת לָא֨וֹצָר֥וֹת לַתְּרוּמוֹת֘ לָֽרֵאשִׁ֣ית וְלַמַּֽעַשְׂרוֹת֒ לִכְנ֨וֹס בָּהֶ֜ם לִשְׂדֵ֚י הֶֽעָרִים֙ מְנָא֣וֹת הַתּוֹרָ֔ה לַכֹּֽהֲנִ֖ים וְלַֽלְוִיִּ֑ם כִּי שִׂמְחַ֣ת יְהוּדָ֔ה עַל־הַכֹּֽהֲנִ֥ים וְעַל־הַלְוִיִּ֖ם הָעֹֽמְדִֽים:
were appointed: Heb. וַיִפָקְדוּ, a word meaning appointment.   ויפקדו: לשון פקידות:
the chambers: Heb. הַנְשָׁכוֹת, like הַלְשָּׁכוֹת, the chambers of the Temple.   הנשכות: כמו הלשכות של בית המקדש:
to gather in them: And in these chambers they would place all the gifts of the priests and the Levites, and from there they would distribute [them] among them.   לכנוס בהם: ובאותן הלשכות היו נותנים כל מתנותיהם של כהנים ולוים ומשם היו חולקין ביניהם:
portions: Heb. מְנָאוֹת like מָנוֹת.   מנאות: כמו מנות:
for the priests and for the Levites: The priests were taking what was due them and the Levites what was due them.   לכהנים ללוים: כהנים היו נוטלים הראוי להם והלוים הראוי להם:
who stood: and ministered there before the Holy One, blessed be He, with thanksgiving offerings and thanksgivings.   העומדים: ומשמשים שם לפני הקב"ה בתודות והודאות:
45And they kept the charge of their God and the charge of purification, and [so did] the singers and the gate sentries, according to the mandate of David [to] Solomon his son.   מהוַיִּשְׁמְר֞וּ מִשְׁמֶ֚רֶת אֱלֹֽהֵיהֶם֙ וּמִשְׁמֶ֣רֶת הַטָּֽהֳרָ֗ה וְהַֽמְשֹֽׁרְרִ֖ים וְהַשֹּֽׁעֲרִ֑ים כְּמִצְוַ֥ת דָּוִ֖יד שְׁלֹמֹ֥ה בְנֽוֹ:
46For in the days of David and Asaph, who were the leaders of the singers of yore and [who established] songs of praise and thanksgiving to God.   מוכִּֽי־בִימֵ֥י דָּוִ֛יד וְאָסָ֖ף מִקֶּ֑דֶם רָאשֵׁי֙ (כתיב רָאשֵׁ֙) הַֽמְשֹֽׁרְרִ֔ים וְשִֽׁיר־תְּהִלָּ֥ה וְהוֹד֖וֹת לֵֽאלֹהִֽים:
47And all Israel in the days of Zerubbabel and in the days of Nehemiah gave the portions of the singers and the gate sentries, the requirement of each day on its day, and they consecrated [them] for the Levites, and the Levites consecrated [them] for the sons of Aaron.   מזוְכָל־יִשְׂרָאֵל֩ בִּימֵ֨י זְרֻבָּבֶ֜ל וּבִימֵ֣י נְחֶמְיָ֗ה נֹֽתְנִ֛ים מְנָי֛וֹת הַֽמְשֹֽׁרְרִ֥ים וְהַשֹּֽׁעֲרִ֖ים דְּבַר־י֣וֹם בְּיוֹמ֑וֹ וּמַקְדִּשִׁים֙ לַֽלְוִיִּ֔ם וְהַֽלְוִיִּ֔ם מַקְדִּשִׁ֖ים לִבְנֵ֛י אַֽהֲרֹֽן:
the portions: Heb. מְנָיוֹת, like מָנוֹת.   מניות: כמו מנות:
and they consecrated [them] for the Levites: And they would give the tithe to the Levites, who would take the tithe from the tithe and give it to the priests.   ומקדישים ללוים: היו נותנים במעשר ללוים והם היו נוטלים מעשר מן המעשר ונותנים לכהנים:
