15And I gathered them to the flowing river, to Ahavah, and we encamped there for three days, and I surveyed the people and the priests, and of the sons of Levi I did not find there.
to the flowing river: Heb. הַבָּא אֶל הַנָהָר, lit. to the coming river.
to Ahava: to that river.
and we encamped there: and we were camping there.
and I surveyed the people: I directed my attention to survey the people who had gathered with me.
16And I sent to Eliezer, Ariel, Shemaiah, Elnathan, Jarib, Elnathan, Nathan, Zechariah, and Meshullam, the heads, and Joiarib and Elnathan, the wise men.
And I sent to Eliezer… the heads: the great men.
the wise men: Heb. מְבִינִים, lit. understanding. They were wise men.
17And I commanded them to [go to] Iddo, the head in the place Casiphia, and I put words into their mouth to speak to Iddo [and] to Ahiv, who were settled in the place Casiphia to bring us servants for the House of our God.
And I commanded them, etc.: I sent them and commanded them to speak to Iddo, who was the greatest and most esteemed in Casiphia.
to Iddo: Heb. עַל אִדוֹ, lit. about Iddo.
and I put… into their mouth: I put into their mouth words to speak as my emissary to Iddo and his brother, who were placed and settled in Casiphia, to bring us servants to serve in the Temple.
in Casiphia: the name of a place in Babylon.
Ahiv: the name of a man.
who were settled: Heb. הַנְתִינִים, like הַנְתוּנִים, those who were settled. Therefore, it is written with a “vav.”
18And they brought us according to the hand of our God, which was good over us, a man of intellect, of the sons of Mahli, the son of Levi, the son of Israel, and Sherebiah and his sons and his brothers, eighteen.
according to the hand of our God: just as the success of the Holy One, blessed be He, was upon us.
a man of intellect: a wise man.
of the sons of Mahli…: All these were Levites.
19And Hashabiah, and with him Jeshaiah of the sons of Merari, his brothers and their sons, twenty.
20And of the Nethinites, whom King David had appointed, and the chiefs, for the service of the Levites, Nethinites [were] two hundred and twenty-all of them specified by name.
And of the Nethinites: And of the slaves, the Nethnites that King David had appointed, and the chefs of Israel ascended with them.
21And I proclaimed there a fast by the river Ahava, to fast before our God, to beseech Him for a straight way for us and for our children and for all our belongings.
to fast: Heb. לְהִתְעַנוֹת to fast.
a straight way: that the Omnipresent lead us in peace.
22For I was ashamed to request of the king an army and horsemen to aid us from enemies on the way, for we had said to the king, "The hand of our God is upon all who seek Him for good, and His power and His wrath are upon all who forsake Him."
For I was ashamed: For I was ashamed of the king, and I did not wish to request of him chariots and horsemen in order to guide us.
for we had said: For we had already said to King Darius that the Holy One, blessed be He, benefits those who seek Him and pours out His wrath and His anger upon those who forsake Him.
23And we fasted and beseeched our God concerning this, and He accepted our prayer.
and He accepted our prayer: for we arrived safely in Jerusalem.
24And I separated twelve of the chiefs of the priests, Sherebiah, Hashabiah, and with them, ten of their brothers.
And I separated: And when I was there by the river Ahava, I separated some of the chiefs of the priests and weighed out the silver and the gold for them to deposit into the treasuries of the House of the Lord.
25And I weighed out for them the silver and the gold and the vessels, the offering for the House of our God, which the king, his advisers, his chiefs, and all Israel who were present, had offered.
which… had offered: which those living in Babylon had offered.
26And I weighed out upon their hands six hundred and fifty talents of silver, and one hundred silver vessels by talents, [and] one hundred talents of gold.
and one hundred silver vessels by talents: one talent for each vessel.
27And twenty sprinkling bowls of gold of one thousand darics, and two vessels of fine golden copper, precious as gold.
And… sprinkling bowls: bowls for sprinkling [the blood of the sacrifices].
of one thousand darics: a type of coin. There were one thousand darics in these twenty sprinkling bowls of gold.
golden: of golden copper (or) a type of copper coin.
fine: Heb. טוֹבָה, the feminine form, modifying copper (נְחֹשֶּׁת).
two: two vessels.
precious as gold: Heb. He calls the vessels חֲמוּדוֹת in the feminine form.
28And I said to them, "You are holy to the Lord, and the vessels are holy, and the silver and the gold are a donation to the Lord God of your forefathers.
to them: to these chiefs of the priests.
29Hasten and guard [them] until you weigh [them] out before the chiefs of the priests and the Levites, and the chiefs of the fathers' [houses] of Israel in Jerusalem, [to deposit in] the chambers of the House of the Lord."
the chambers of the House of the Lord: in order to deposit them in the chambers of the Temple.
30And the priests and the Levites received by weight the silver, the gold, and the vessels, to bring to Jerusalem for the House of our God.
31Then we traveled from the river Ahava on the twelfth of the first month to go to Jerusalem, and the hand of our God was upon us, and He saved us from the clutches of the enemy and those who lie in wait on the way.
on the twelfth of the first month: on the twelfth of Nissan
the hand of our God was upon us: to cause us to succeed in the way that we traversed.
32And we came to Jerusalem and stayed there three days.
33And on the fourth day, the silver, the gold, and the vessels were weighed in the House of our God onto the hand of Meremoth the son of Uriah the priest, and with him Eleazar the son of Phinehas, and with them Josebad the son of Jeshua, and Noadiah the son of Binnui, the Levites.
34Everything was counted and weighed and the entire weight was written at that time.
Everything was counted and weighed: The number of the vessels and their weights was the same when they received them as when they itemized them.
35Those coming from captivity, the people of the exile, offered up burnt offerings to the God of Israel, twelve bulls for all Israel, ninety-six rams, seventy-seven lambs, and twelve he-goats for sin-offerings, all this was a burnt offering to the Lord.
Those coming from captivity, the people of the exile: those who came with Ezra.
offered up burnt offerings: all were burnt offerings, and it was a temporary ruling.
