Chapter 112

1Hallelujah. Praiseworthy is the man who fears the Lord, who greatly desires His commandments.   אהַֽלְלוּיָ֨הּ | אַשְׁרֵי־אִ֖ישׁ יָרֵ֣א אֶת־יְהֹוָ֑ה בְּ֜מִצְו‍ֹתָ֗יו חָפֵ֥ץ מְאֹֽד:
2His seed will be mighty in the land, a generation of upright ones, which shall be blessed.   בגִּבּ֣וֹר בָּאָרֶץ יִֽהְיֶ֣ה זַרְע֑וֹ דּ֖וֹר יְשָׁרִ֣ים יְבֹרָֽךְ:
a generation of upright ones. which will be blessed, will be his seed.   דור ישרים.  אשר יבורך יהיה זרעו:
3Wealth and riches will be in his house, and his righteousness endures forever.   גהוֹן־וָעֹ֥שֶׁר בְּבֵית֑וֹ וְ֜צִדְקָת֗וֹ עֹמֶ֥דֶת לָעַֽד:
4He shone a light in the darkness for the upright, [for He is] gracious and merciful and righteous.   דזָ֘רַ֚ח בַּחֹ֣שֶׁךְ א֣וֹר לַיְשָׁרִ֑ים חַנּ֖וּן וְרַח֣וּם וְצַדִּֽיק:
He shone a light in the darkness. Heb. זרח [the “kal” conjugation], like הזריח, [the “hiph’il” or causative conjugation]. Its midrashic interpretation is that He Himself, so to speak, becomes a light for them, as (above 27:1): “The Lord is my light and my salvation.”   זרח בחשך אור.  כמו הזריח, ומדרשו הוא עצמו כביכול נעשה להם אור כמו ה' אורי וישעי (לעיל כ"ז):
5Good is the man who is gracious and lends, who conducts his affairs with moderation.   הט֣וֹב אִ֖ישׁ חוֹנֵ֣ן וּמַלְוֶ֑ה יְכַלְכֵּ֖ל דְּבָרָ֣יו בְּמִשְׁפָּֽט:
Good is the man who is gracious, etc.. who is gracious to the poor and lends [to] them, and is not strict, saying, “I cannot afford it,” but [instead] his things, which he needs for himself, in food, drink, and clothing, he conducts with moderation and with a measure, and he spares his property.   טוב איש חונן ומלוה וגו'.  שחונן דלים ומלוה להם ואינו מדקדק לומר אין יכולת בידי, ואת דבריו הצריכין לו במאכל ובמשתה ובכסות מכלכל במשפט ובמדה וחס על נכסיו:
Who conducts his affairs.    יכלכל דבריו במשפט.  מנהיג חפציו:
6For he will never falter; for an everlasting memorial will the righteous man be.   וכִּֽי־לְ֖עוֹלָם לֹ֣א יִמּ֑וֹט לְזֵ֥כֶר ע֜וֹלָ֗ם יִֽהְיֶ֥ה צַדִּֽיק:
7He will not fear bad news; his heart is steadfast, trusting in the Lord.   זמִשְּׁמוּעָ֣ה רָ֖עָה לֹ֣א יִירָ֑א נָ֘כ֥וֹן לִ֜בּ֗וֹ בָּטֻ֥חַ בַּֽיהֹוָֽה:
his heart is steadfast. His heart is faithful to His Maker.   נכון לבו.  נאמן לבו ליוצרו:
8His heart is steadfast, he will not fear until he sees in his adversaries.   חסָמ֣וּךְ לִ֖בּוֹ לֹ֣א יִירָ֑א עַ֖ד אֲשֶׁר־יִרְאֶ֣ה בְצָרָֽיו:
His heart is steadfast. He leans on and trusts in the Holy One, blessed be He.   סמוך לבו.  נשען ובטוח על הקב"ה:
9He distributed, he gave to the needy; his charity endures forever, his horn will be raised with glory.   טפִּזַּ֚ר | נָ֘תַ֚ן לָאֶֽבְיוֹנִ֗ים צִ֖דְקָתוֹ עֹמֶ֣דֶת לָעַ֑ד קַ֜רְנ֗וֹ תָּר֥וּם בְּכָבֽוֹד:
10A wicked man will see and become angry; he will gnash his teeth and melt; the desire of the wicked will be lost.   ירָשָׁ֚ע יִרְאֶ֨ה | וְכָעָ֗ס שִׁנָּ֣יו יַֽחֲרֹ֣ק וְנָמָ֑ס תַּֽאֲוַ֖ת רְשָׁעִ֣ים תֹּאבֵֽד:
A wicked man will see and become angry. Heb. וכעס, an expression of a verb in the past tense, equivalent to ויכעס [i.e., the “vav” converts the past tense to the future]. Therefore, it is vowelized half with a “kamatz” and half with a “pattah,” and the accent is at the end of the word.   רשע יראה וכעס.  ל' פעל כמו ויכעס לפיכך נקוד חציו קמץ וחציו פתח וטעמו למטה:
