Chapter 25

1Then the word of the Lord came to me, saying:
2"Son of man, set your face toward the children of Ammon, and prophesy about them.
3And you shall say to the children of Ammon; Hearken to the word of the Lord God: So said the Lord God: Because you said, 'Aha!' about My sanctuary for it was possessed, and about the soil of Israel for it became desolate, and about the house of Judah for they went into exile.
Aha!: An expression of joy.
because it was possessed: [Heb. Because it was possessed (נִנְחָל) and became an inheritance for others.
4Therefore, behold I am delivering you to the children of the East as a possession, and they will settle their palaces in you, and they will set up their dwellings in you; they will eat your fruit, and they will drink your milk.
to the children of the East: The Chaldeans and Aram are to the east.
5And I shall make Rabbah into a dwelling place for camels and the children of Ammon for a couching place for flocks, and you will know that I am the Lord.
6For so said the Lord God: Because you clapped with your hand and stamped with your foot, and you rejoiced with all the disdain of your soul about the soil of Israel,
Because you clapped with your hand and stamped with your foot: for joy. Although he said this at the beginning of the Book in reference to mourning (6:11): “Strike with your hand and stamp with your foot, and say, Ah!” there are things that are done for [both] mourning and joy, but the idea behind them is not the same. Similarly, flutes for a bride and for the dead.
and stamped: [Heb. וְרַקְעֲ,] an expression of stamping.
with all the disdain: [Heb. שָּׁאטְ,] interpreted as an expression of disdain, like (Gen. 25:34): “and Esau despised,” which Onkelos renders: וְשָׁט, but I say that שָּׁאטְ is an expression of lust, golozemant or golosement in Old French, ardent desire, gluttony.
7Therefore, behold I have stretched forth My hand upon you, and I have given you for plunder to the nations, I have cut you off from the peoples and I shall make you perish from among the lands; I shall destroy you, and you will know that I am the Lord.
8So said the Lord God: Because Moab and Seir said, "Behold the house of Judah is like all the nations,"   חכֹּ֥ה אָמַ֖ר אֲדֹנָ֣י יֱהֹוִ֑ה יַ֗עַן אֲמֹ֚ר מוֹאָב֙ וְשֵׂעִ֔יר הִנֵּ֥ה כְּכָל־הַגּוֹיִ֖ם בֵּ֥ית יְהוּדָֽה:
Behold the house of Judah is like all the nations: The love of the Holy One, blessed be He, has been annulled from them, and they are rejected, to be given into the hands of Nebuchadnezzar like the other nations. The Midrash Aggadah (see Lam. Rabbah, Proem 9) [says] that they entered the Temple and peeled off the pictures of the cherubim that Solomon had painted on the wall of the Temple (I Kings 7: 36): “according to the attachment of a man and the joining, etc.” They took them outside and said, “Look at what these [Jews], who were showing themselves as decent people, were occupied with.”
9Therefore, behold I will expose the flank of Moab from the cities, from his cities of his frontier; the beautiful country of Bethjeshimoth, Baal Maon and Kiriathaim,
behold I will expose: the fortresses of the land of Moab that are on the border at the end of their boundary; that is the flank, the end of the boundary of their land, like (Exod. 27:15): “And on the other side,” to the flank, which Targum [Jonathan] translates לְעִיבְרָא, to the side.
10To the children of the East against the children of Ammon. And I shall give it as an inheritance, in order that the children of Ammon shall not be remembered among the nations.
To the children of the East: I will expose them so that they should come upon the children of Ammon through the land of Moab.
11And upon Moab, I shall perform judgments, and they will know that I am the Lord.
12So said the Lord God: Because of what Edom did when I took revenge on the house of Judah-and they were guilty and took revenge on them,
13Therefore, so said the Lord God: I shall stretch forth My hand upon Edom, and I shall cut off from her both man and beast, and I shall lay it waste from the south, and Dedan will fall by the sword.
and Dedan: [Heb. וּדְדָנֶה,] the inhabitants of Dedan.
14And I shall lay My revenge upon Edom by the hand of My people Israel, and they will do to Edom according to My wrath and according to My fury, and they will know my vengeance, says the Lord God.
by the hand of My people Israel: They will be My agents to wreak My vengeance.
15So said the Lord God: Because the Philistines acted with vengeance and took revenge with [the] disdain of [their] soul to destroy for the hatred of old.
Because the Philistines acted with vengeance: With hatred and with rigor, like a man who wreaks vengeance upon his enemy.
16Therefore, so said the Lord God: Behold I stretch forth My hand upon the Philistines, and I shall cut off the Cherethites and destroy the survivors on the seacoast.
the Cherethites: [Heb. כְּרֵתִים,] a nation deserving of being cut off (Targum). But I say, because I saw elsewhere that Scripture calls the Philistines כְּרֵתִים (Zeph. 2:5): “Woe to the inhabitants of the seacoast, the nation of (כְּרֵתִים) ,” and it does not give any other nation this appellation, it appears to me that there is a region of Philistia called Chereth, and so I find in the Book of (I) Samuel (30:14), concerning the group that set fire to Ziklag: “We made a raid on the south of the Cherethites.”
the seacoast: [Heb. חוֹף הַיָם,] marche in Old French, frontier, borderland. They are Philistines, who live in the southwestern corner of the land of Israel on the Western (Mediterranean) Sea.
17And I shall wreak great acts of vengeance with rebukes of fury, and they will know that I am the Lord when I lay My vengeance upon them.
