Chapter 42

And all the officers of the armies and Johanan the son of Kareah and Jezaniah the son of Hoshiah and all the people from the smallest to the greatest, came near.
And they said to Jeremiah the prophet, "Let our supplication now fall before you, and pray in our behalf to the Lord your God on behalf of all this remnant, for we remain few out of many, as your eyes see us.
And then let the Lord your God tell the way we should go and the thing we should do.
And Jeremiah the prophet said to them, "I have heard [you]. Behold I will pray to the Lord your God according to your words, and it will come to pass that whatever the Lord answers you I will tell you; I will not withhold anything from you."
And they said to Jeremiah, "May the Lord be a true and faithful witness against us if we do not do according to the entire matter that the Lord your God shall send you to us.
Whether good or bad, we will hearken to the voice of the Lord our God, to Whom we are sending you, in order that it be good for us, for we will hearken to the voice of the Lord our God.
And it came to pass at the end of ten days that the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah.
And he called to Johanan the son of Kareah and to all the officers of the armies that were with him, both great and small.
And he said to them: So said the Lord God of Israel, to Whom you have sent me to present your supplication before Him.

But if you say, "We will not dwell in this land, not to hearken to the voice of the Lord your God,   יגוְאִם־אֹֽמְרִ֣ים אַתֶּ֔ם לֹ֥א נֵשֵׁ֖ב בָּאָ֣רֶץ הַזֹּ֑את לְבִלְתִּ֣י שְׁמֹ֔עַ בְּק֖וֹל יְהֹוָ֥ה אֱלֹהֵיכֶֽם:

And now, therefore, hearken to the word of the Lord, O remnant of Judah, so said the Lord of Hosts, the God of Israel; If you direct your faces to come to Egypt and you come to dwell there,
