1In the beginning of the reign of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, the king of Judah, this word came from the Lord, saying: |
In the beginning of the reign. This chapter below preceded the above chapter by four years. |

2So said the Lord: Stand in the court of the house of the Lord, and you shall speak to all the cities of Judah that come to prostrate themselves in the house of the Lord, all the words that I have commanded you to speak to them; do not omit a word. |
3Perhaps they will heed and repent, each one of his evil way, and I will repent of the evil that I think to do to them because of the evil of their deeds. |
4And you shall say to them: So said the Lord, If you do not heed Me to walk in My law that I have placed before you, |
5To heed the words of My servants, the prophets, whom I send to you betimes, and you did not heed. |
6I will make this house like Shiloh and this city I will make into a curse to all the nations of the earth. |

7And the priests and the prophets and all the people heard Jeremiah speaking these words in the house of the Lord. |

8And it came to pass when Jeremiah finished speaking all that the Lord had commanded him to speak to all the people, that the priests, the prophets, and all the people seized him, saying, "You shall surely die. |
9Why have you prophesied in the name of the Lord, saying, 'This house shall be like Shiloh, and this city shall be desolate without an inhabitant'?" And all the people congregated upon Jeremiah in the house of the Lord. |
10And the princes of Judah heard these words and went up from the king's house to the house of the Lord, and they sat at the entrance of the new gate of the Lord. |
And the princes of Judah heard. that the false prophets and the priests had seized Jeremiah. |

at the entrance of the new gate of the Lord. Others annotated: When Jehoiachin went in exile and some of the vessels of the house of our God went with him, Nebuchadnezzar’s army breached the eastern gate, and Zedekiah subsequently repaired it and renewed it. It is therefore called ‘new.’ |

20Also a man was prophesying in the name of the Lord, Uriah the son of Shemaiah of Kiriath-jearim, and he prophesied concerning this city and concerning this land, like all the words of Jeremiah. |
Also a man was prophesying. The one who said this did not say this. I.e., those who related the incident of Micah did not relate the incident concerning Uriah. Up to here are the words of the righteous. Now the wicked who were there arose and said, “Also a man was prophesying, etc.” Just as Uriah was killed, so shall Jeremiah be killed. In this way it is explained in Sifrei (Num. 11:7). |
