The Hebrew Month of Tammuz
Tammuz (Tamuz) is the fourth of the 12 months of the Jewish calendar, counting from Nisan. The month of Tammuz begins the “season” of the summer. The three months of this season are Tammuz, Av and Elul.
The 17th day of Tammuz—a fast day that commemorates the day when the walls of Jerusalem were breached by the Romans (in 69 C.E.)—marks the beginning of a period known as “the Three Weeks.”

Rabbi Nachman teaches that the name of the month of Tammuz is in fact rooted int the Hebrew Letters Tav, Mem and zayin
zeman matan Toraseinu because originally Moshe Rabbeinu came down on 17 Tammuz but due to the sin of the Golden Calf, he broke them and Torah was not given that day as intended. The dimensions of the tablets were 6x6 and so the letter vav (whose numerical value is 6) is added to those three letters when spelling out the month Tammuz in Hebrew. The Torah went back up that day but the broken tablets remained below. Zayin Tav and Mem also spell out Zichru Toras Moshe- remember the Torah of Moshe. Talmud Eruvin says that when the tablets were broken Torah was forgotten. Therefore, Tammuz teaches klal Yisrael that we must remember Toras MOSHE. Definitely not a random naming of the month. (ditto for every Hebrew month)
Why not change this name as part of repentance and knowing that they were wrong.. look at the history of Israel keeping the name. smh
Is it possible that it could be because in Ezekiel 8, women were found at the northern gate of the temple weeping for Tammuz? And maybe this happens on the summer solstice which is during the month of Tammuz? I don’t know, just a thought.
The remainder of the story is this....(see my first post) -- They used the name Tammuz (knowing it was a name of a Babylonian god) because it reminded them of the judgment that comes from idolatry -- this is what the sages said about it. Beginning with the golden calf incident and later with he secret cult worship in high places that led to the destruction of the Temple. I found this on a website about Tammuz (the month). Hopefully this helps...

Why would the month of Tammuz be named after a pagan god? Seems strange. Was there a previous name before the Babylonian captivity? Thank you.

I can only think that it was named that because they (Israel) worshipped the other gods of the other cities/nations. ? Maybe it was named that because they did falsely worship & it's a reminder maybe?
According to Leviticus 23, the Most High named it the “Fourth month”. Current names were adopted in Babylonian exile.

Can you share more insight on the original names of the feasts? The Most High is very clear about idol worship and we are to be careful the get it right once and for all
It is so hard to find the days of the seven feasts of the bible. They seem to have made it into far more than the bible shows. I'll continue to search to know what and when they are.
