Positive Commandment 7 (Digest)
Swearing in G‑d's Name

"And swear by His Name"Deuteronomy 10:20.

When necessary to conclusively confirm or deny, we are commanded to swear solely in G‑d's Name. This constitutes an honor for, and exaltation of, G‑d.

It is forbidden to swear in the name of any other entity, such as an angel or constellation, unless the person's intention is only to swear in the name of the one and only Power who created these entities.

Daily Quote
"Mitzvah" is related to the word "tzavta," which means "joining" and "attachment": by performing a mitzvah, a person is joined to the essence of G-d, who issues that particular command. Thus "The reward of a mitzvah is the mitzvah"--being joined with the essence of the Infinite is itself the deed's reward.
