Why has to be "samach"?

Todah for your very nice Shiurim. I have a question for the pasuk of vChathabetha. Why is a letter samach not in the pasuk? You taught us that it means that they went 60 mill inland. But why does it have to be 60? Is it because samach means secret? If so, what is the secret?
