Those of us who oppose capitol punshment meted out by civil courts do not necessarily oppose it in a court of Jewish law.
I accept completely the idea that atonement for the murderer is achieved by the imposition of the death sentence. Nevertheless, a court who did so more than once in seven (or seventy) years was called a "bloody" court.
Our current civil courts are demonstrably unjust in their imposition of the death penalty, and it is very possible that some who were innocent have been killed.
