Can a person volunteer to get killed instead of everyone dying?
Yes, they can. There is an incident the Talmud relates about the martyrs of Lod, Pappos, and Luliyanos, who gave themselves up to be martyred for the sake of the Jewish people. They falsely admitted to killing the king’s daughter in order to prevent the entire community being killed. The sages of the Talmud said that no one can share in their exalted reward in Heaven.
