Tribal positions when they traveled I'm no scholar, but it seems to me that if they traveled in a straight line, it would take longer for the ones at the end to arrive after the first ones had stopped. Also, tactically speaking, They would all be too vulnerable to attack and the Ark, in the middle, would not be shielded on either side. If they moved in position, they could all start out and stop at about the same time. The Ark would also be fully shielded all the time from all directions. That was a lot of people on the move. A queue would have extended for many miles.
I'm not much of a scholar myself, and would like to thank you for your observation!
I thought it was the other way around, in that the Ark was protecting them and they needed to keep it dead center everywhere they traveled instead of them guarding he Ark!
