Rabbi Avraham Berkowitz, a Moscow-based Chabad-Lubavitch emissary who for 10 years served as the executive director of the Federation of Jewish Communities of the Former Soviet Union, has been appointed director of the Chabad Mumbai Relief Fund.

With a mission to ensure the continuity of Rabbi Gavriel and Rivka Holtzberg’s life service, Berkowitz will lead the global campaign to rebuild Mumbai’s destroyed Chabad House and ensure lifetime support for the Holtzberg’s orphan son, Moshe.

“It’s an honor to be able to serve the Holtzbergs’ memory by uniting tens of thousands of Jews around the world in learning from their example and helping their lives’ mission to live on,” said Berkowitz, who previously served as the executive director of the Federation of Jewish Communities of the Former Soviet Union for 10 years.

The fund, which was established in the days following the Nov. 26 Mumbai terror attacks, is governed by an international board that operates under the auspices of Lubavitch World Headquarters in Brooklyn, N.Y.
