Jewish History

Rabbi Eliezer ben Eliyahu Ashkenazi (1512-1585) was a highly regarded Talmudist, as well as a physician. He authored various works, including Ma'ase ha-Shem -- a commentary on the historical portions of the Pentateuch, also including a commentary on the Passover Hagaddah -- and Yosef Lekach, dedicated and named after Don Yosef Nasi, the Duke of Naxos.

Daily Thought

Fighting evil is a very noble job. But it is not your mission in life.

Your job is to bring in more light.

Stay completely out of such battles, arguments, and debates.

Not because you aren't able to win. Not because your heart is too delicate to go to war.

But because every bit of your energy needs to be dedicated exclusively to strengthening the good that you have built, to give your very life for it.

Then, only then, can you succeed.

Based on a letter of Rabbi Yosef YItzchak Schneersohn to Rabbi I. Herzog, then Chief Rabbi of Israel. See Hayom Yom, 14 Elul.
