I would love to retrieve this old Chanukah song In 1969, my fourth grade chorus sang a song for our holiday concert that began, "Spinning Spinning, Whirling Whirling (2x) When I was a little child I used to dance the hora, in the flickering candle light that shown from my menorah, tops all spinning 'round, what a whirling sound, everyone gay, for Chanukah so merry!" Oh Chankah1 I remember when I was a little girl and mom would be preparing for the Chanukah holiday and dad would be preparing for the Chanukah holiday and what can I say, they would be arguing right up to the lighting of the menorah and dad would tell stories about the holiday and mom would look so beautiful-when I turned this song on this morning-I cried and saw dad in his suit and mom all dressed up lighting the menorah-They passed on now,eight years exactly-six months apart from each other-they couldn't live without each other-Wow, I thought it was longer than eight years now just goes to show you how you can miss your parents and Chanukah the way it was. Another version I am not Jewish, I am of Greek Origin born and riased in Montreal. In my fourth grade choir we were taught a Chaunica song at the same time as Christmas songs, and so honoring our Jewish Classmates.

That was almost thirty years ago. I don't remember any of the Christmas songs we performed that year, but I remember the verison of the Chaunica song like it were yesterday:

Tis the week of Chaunica, Good cheer it is bringing, this holiday we celebrate with dancing and singing, gather round together, the hora we'll do, then join in a song that our forefathers knew, but hush now, and come now, the candles we light one by one, then hear the story of G-d and his glory and how precious freedom was won!

The version posted on this site has the same melody, but other words.

Im wondering if our teacher did not change the actual lyrics for our benefit, or the version I remember is just another version out there..

Oy Chanukah! Oy Chanuka! I am so pleased that, alll over the world, people are sending in their own versions since I ORIGINALLY asked the question from here in Northern England if anyone knew it??! But what I REALLY would like to hear is a boys` choir singing the orginial song in YIDDISH please....and I wish all everyone celebrating Chanukah the world over a FEILICHEN CHANUKAH with lots of dsoughnuts (English spelling!!) and latkes!!!
