“The Lord G-d is a sun and a shield.” “The Jewish people are likened to the moon.” The union between man and G-d is formed when a person makes himself a “small luminary,” a reflection of G-d.

The sun is the “great luminary” which sustains all life on earth. There are those who mistakenly perceive the sun’s cycle as a self-sustaining natural order. Precisely at the moment when the sun shines in all its glory, Jews gather together and publicly recite the Blessing of the Sun: “Blessed is He Who brings the works of creation into existence.” We remind all the nations that it is G-d who created — and continues to create – all of nature, and all nature’s laws.

When one beholds the mighty sun’s cycle renewed, it is a time to strengthen his awareness of G-d’s role in creation, and impact the way he will live his life in the future.
