An address to children: We are commanded to appoint judges and policemen in all our cities. A judge of Torah law teaches people how to live their lives happily and productively. The policeman's task is to maintain law and order and to keep bad influences away. In the same way, Torah expects every individual to teach and guard his home, to keep it a happy, healthy Torah environment. So, too, every Jewish child must set the tone in his or her own room, which is his or her own little “city.” His books, his charity box and all his possessions should be kept clean and orderly. Only good influences should be allowed in. The watchman stationed at the gateway to a city decides who should be allowed to enter and who not. So too, with the gateways to our bodies – our eyes and ears. We should watch and listen to only good things. Then, what doesn’t belong, will automatically be left outside. |
