Event Date: 20 Av 5735 - July 28, 1975

The Rebbe’s father, Rabbi Levi Yitzchak Schneerson, served as the Rabbi of Yekaterinoslav. Standing up to the Communist authorities, he fought to preserve Judaism in the Soviet Union. His efforts cost him his life, when after torture in Stalin’s prisons and exile in Kazakhstan, he passed away on the 20th of Av in 1944.

When a Jew goes out into the world armed with the belief that inside, everything in the world contains a Godly spark; “God’s word” which enlivens creation, this gives him the strength to be undaunted by the world around him. Instead, he sees himself as God’s agent in the world. His hand is merely a vehicle for fulfilling God’s will, and this recognition helps him overcome all obstacles in his way.
