Rabbi Yosef Mendelevitch is a Rabbi and teacher living in Jerusalem, Israel. He is famous for his struggles in Soviet Russia where he was imprisoned for almost a decade for his public attempts to immigrate to Israel from the Soviet Union. It is the Rebbe’s care and direction, however, which led him down the path on which he finds himself until this day.(year 1980)

Yosef Mendelevich was a Jewish refusenik in the former Soviet Union who spent 12 years in the Gulag together with fellow refusenik Natan Sharansky. Being repeatedly refused the right to immigrate to Israel, he became one of the leaders of the Dymshits–Kuznetsov hijacking affair. In 1981, after a worldwide struggle, he was released and immigrated to Israel. He is author of Unbroken Spirit: A Heroic Story of Faith, Courage and Survival. His latest book is 'A hero of Jewish Freedom'.
