“Fill the Earth and Subdue It”

The first commandment in the Torah is to have children. When G-d created Adam and Eve, He blessed them and said: “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it, and rule over the fish of the sea and over the fowl of the sky and over all the beasts that tread upon the earth.”

The first commandment in the Torah is to have children. When G-d created Adam and Eve, He blessed them and said: “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it, and rule over the fish of the sea and over the fowl of the sky and over all the beasts that tread upon the earth.”

The responsibility of parents towards children is not merely to bring them into this world, but to give them the tools and ability to then fulfill the remainder of the verse.

The Rebbe mentions the custom of surrounding the newborn child with sacred names and verses (6:12). The verses the Rebbe refers to are from chapter 121 of Psalms. Chabad families hang this chapter wherever the newborn will be, including the hospital room, carseat, crib, and doorframes throughout the house.
