A beautiful home is essential, as the Sages teach, “a pleasant home, pleasant furnishings and a pleasant wife broaden one’s mind.” But what brings out the true beauty of one’s home are the beautiful Mitzvos found within.

The truest “pleasant furnishings” a Jewish house can have are holy books. They should be prominently displayed and easily accessible for family members or guests to find any topic in Torah, whenever the need or interest arises.

This is a special directive for the woman of the house, who generally chooses and arranges the interior décor. It is part of her role to ensure that her home be filled with holy books, “the knowledge of G-d,” and that everyone knows, by her example, that their content is the true life of the home.

If you're struggling financially and can't afford to buy seforim, you do have options.Try going to your local synagogue. They'll most likely have a library, so ask if you can borrow the books you seek. I can't think of any reason they wouldn't be okay with it. Many Jewish sacred texts are available online for free here on chabad.org. Also try your local library. Even if they don't have sacred books, they may still have other Jewish movies, music, and books which could be useful. I also recommend learning about the Jewish community of your area or where you grew up. I hope this helps! Reply
