After the Talmudic sage Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai committed the Zohar to writing, he was informed by Heaven: “With this book of yours the Jewish people will be sustained.” The purpose of Kabbalah, the inner dimension of Torah, is to “sustain” and permeate one’s entire being, such that even when he studies the revealed dimension of Torah, it is evident that he sees it as God’s wisdom, because he infuses it with love and awe of God. But in order for the inner dimension of Torah to have its sustaining effect, it must be studied. |
