Materially-speaking, Jews today have it better than any other time in history. Whereas for most of their two thousand year sojourn in exile, huge numbers of Jews lived in dire poverty, today, even the poorest among them lead comfortable lives.

With all this material prosperity, many Jews feel less and less “free” to devote time to Torah study. And when they do, it is not with peace of mind. Contrast this to times past, when even the poorest Jew would tear himself away from his worries and would study Torah with inner peace and tranquility, enabling him to actually innovate in Torah.

The secret: When a Jew recognizes the Master of creation, that G-d is the one in control of his material success and he need only create the proper vessel, this awareness brings him to inner peace, and makes the Jew a king over his own life.
