Jewish Federations play a valiant role in the collection of funds for Jewish causes worldwide. With this comes the enormous responsibility of allocating the funds appropriately. Services that provide physical, mental and emotional rehabilitation are very worthy causes. But there are two approaches to healing: to wait until one contracts a disease, G-d forbid, and then find ways to heal, which is both very costly and causes great pain to both patient and family; or the approach prescribed by Torah – to prevent disease in the first place. Proper education is the best preventive cure against the physical and spiritual ailments of society. When a child is raised to lead a balanced lifestyle and to behave in a moral and ethical fashion, he evades the hazards that bring on disease in the first place. Therefore, alongside all the other good causes which they support, the foremost priority of Jewish charity funds must be to provide wholesome education, producing children who are physically and spiritually healthy. |
