Disc 89, Program 356
Event Date: 13 Tishrei 5744 - September 20, 1983
The verse states: “He gave his own bread to the destitute.” The Talmud explains that this refers to Moses giving the Torah to the Jewish people. But every word of the verse is precise: “He gave his own bread” – Moses didn’t give what was ’extra’ of his own spiritual needs… Rather, “He gave his own bread” – that which he literally needed to sustain himself. And to whom did he give it? “To the destitute.” The Sages explain: “True poverty is poverty of knowledge.” Moses sacrificed his own spiritual health for the sake of the lowest of the low… Torah is not merely singing the praises of Moses… Everything in Torah is an instruction for every person – each according to his own level. How much more so when it comes to the extension of Moses in every generation, the leader of the generation – for him, all these qualities are with greater strength and greater intensity. |
