You Rule the Exile, the Exile Doesn’t Rule You

The Evil Inclination is tricky and cunning. He comes to the Jewish child with an argument: “I know you belong to Tzivos Hashem and you must obey the orders of G-d, the Commander-in- Chief. But you are in exile! G-d assumes that since you’re a smart child you will figure out on your own that for the time being you should hold off on your prayers, Torah study and Jewish observance until Moshiach comes and builds the Third Holy Temple.”

Comes the Torah portion of Miketz and relates that although Joseph was living in exile in Egypt – locked up in jail – G-d brought an end to his imprisonment. And not only was Joseph given his freedom, he was appointed viceroy to Pharaoh, becoming the most powerful man in Egypt!

Even in exile, G-d intends for a Jew to behave like a viceroy, as one who leads the land. The people around you have to learn and follow your example, not, G-d forbid, the other way around. Then even in exile you will prosper and flourish, living a full and free life – as a Jew.
