Wise Jewish Child

Wise Jewish Child
Disc 77, Program 307

Event Date: 16 Av 5744 - August 14, 1984

The Code of Jewish law rules that from the 15th of Av and on, as the days grow shorter and the nights longer, a Jew should increase his Torah study each night.

The evil inclination says to the Jewish Child: “Aha! Now that the nights are getting longer, you have more time to sleep and relax!”

Answers the Jewish child: “Foolish Yetzer Horah, you are the biggest ignoramus there could be! How could you not know that starting from the 15th of Av the very opposite is true – we must spend even more time learning Torah?! G-d wants to see what I will do when I am left on my own at home and I look outside and see non-Jewish children going to sleep earlier.”

What does a Jewish child do? Every night, he takes a bit more of his own time and devotes it to learning Torah and fulfilling G-d’s commandments.

summer solstice 15th of Av does NOT mark the summer solstice. That is an astronomical event that is not fixed in the Jewish calendar, as it is the months are not solar, but it always comes in Sivan or Tammuz, never Av. Reply
