Chassidism teaches that the verse, “And Jacob went on his way…” represents the mission of every Jew as he goes back into the world after Tishrei: “Jacob” – The name “Jacob” means “heel.” It is the Jew’s task to uplift the “heel” – the mundane world – to become master over it and make it holy. “Jacob walked…” – When Torah uses the term “walk” it means to step out of one’s original state of being and forge ahead, entirely beyond one’s previous level. “Jacob walked on his way...” – a road connects the furthest corners of the kingdom to the capital city, the royal palace, and ultimately, the throne room of the king himself. Similarly, in a Jew’s road through life, “in all his ways he knows G-d” and “all his actions are for the sake of Heaven.” |
