This letter was sent to R. Shlomo Matusof, a member of the chassidic community who would ultimately assume a leadership role in the activities of Lubavitch in Morocco.
B”H, 12 Elul, 5710
Greetings and blessings,
In response to your letters of 4 and 5 Elul informing [me] that you have fixed the date of your wedding for the coming 18 Elul. May it be [G‑d’s] will that your wedding be held in a good and auspicious hour and your union be viewed with favor [Above]. May you build an eternal edifice on the foundation of the Torah and its mitzvos, as they are explained in the teachings of Chassidus andmay it lead to “a generation of upright [descendants] who will be blessed.” 1
With blessings of mazal tov, mazal tov, to you and your fiancée, Ms. Pesia,
With blessings for a kesivah vachasimah tovah,
M. Schneerson
With regard to your question concerning a wedding ring: the custom in the household of the Rebbeim is to use a gold ring. I saw the members of our fellowship and the chassidim conducting themselves in this manner.
Note what is stated in the text Taamei HaMinhagim in the name of the text Chupas Chasanim that it is customary to place the ring on the finger next to the thumb because [the verse] in kapitle 19 of Tehillim states: “And he like a bridegroom... from gold.” The term “from gold” relates to the finger next to the thumb. Consult that source. 2
