Greetings and blessings,
In reply to your letter of 20 Menachem Av informing [me] that you and your wife have agreed to join a group that are journeying to settle in our Holy Land. You add that if you find a position in the field of mathematics [there], it appears to you that [the offer] should not be rejected and you request a blessing for this.
May it be [G‑d’s] will that you be a medium for the blessings of my revered father-in-law, the Rebbe, הכ"מ, that your journey be satisfactory, and that you reach your destination successfully. “Man’s footsteps are established by G‑d and He shall favor his way.” 1
There is a well-known saying of my revered father-in-law, the Rebbe, הכ"מ, to a person who was journeying to our Holy Land: “Make Eretz Yisrael into a holy land.” We are not aware of the secret of [the path destined for each person to] refine [the material entities designated for him], as [implied by] the well-known statement of our Sages: 2 “A person does not know how he will earn his livelihood....” This also involves one’s spiritual livelihood. Nevertheless, making Eretz Yisrael into a holy land by becoming a math teacher appears to be a very distant path. Mashiach is “standing behind our wall,” 3 waiting for the completion of the task of refinement in this era of ikvesa diMeshicha.
With blessings for a kesivah vachasimah tovah and that your journey to your destination will be satisfactory for you and for your wife,
Menachem Schneerson
