Greetings and blessings,

In reply to your letter of 1 Elul in which you state that the directorate of the yeshivah instructed you to study the laws of the profession of ritual slaughter. You ask whether you should pursue this.

According to my opinion, it is proper for you to gain proficiency in both the slaughter of fowl and the slaughter of large [animals], and — as is self-understood — in the study of the laws of ritual slaughter. May G‑d grant you success in your studies.

You surely have fixed times to study the teachings of my revered father-in-law, the Rebbe, הכ"מ — his discourses, his talks, and his letters.

How nice it would be if the study was with a group, so that one person could reinforce and stimulate his colleague!

It is self-understood that the above does not free one from the other fixed study sessions which each person is obligated to observe, including the study sessions that are universally applicable on a day-to-day basis; i.e., Chumash, with Rashi’s commentary, Tehillim as it is divided according to a monthly schedule, and Tanya, as it was divided according to an annual schedule by my revered father-in-law, the Rebbe, הכ"מ, for these are all mediums through which we can bond with our Nasi, my revered father-in-law, the Rebbe, הכ"מ.

With blessings for a kesivah vachasimah tovah,

Menachem Schneerson
