Greetings and blessings,
I received your letter from 28 Iyar. Thank you for the good news that Rabbi …’s wife is feeling better. May G‑d enable you to merit to always be one who communicates good news.
I was happy to read that your wife helped Rabbi … when he was experiencing difficult times. Long ago, Hillel stated1 that “lov[ing] your fellow man as yourself”2 is the general principle of the [entire] Torah. My revered father-in-law, the Rebbe, explained3 in the name of the Alter Rebbe that the love of one’s fellow man is a medium [that enables one to achieve] “Love G‑d your L‑rd.”4 I hope that, in your case, the love of G‑d and the love of our fellow Jews will accompany each other. And as the Tzemach Tzedek stated,5 “Alef-Beis, Alef stands for ahavah, ‘love.’ This leads to beis, berachah, ‘blessing.’ Gimmel stands for gaavah, ‘pride.’ It leads, Heaven forbid, to dalet, dalus, ‘poverty.’”
For the approaching Shavuos holiday, I bless you to receive the Torah for the entire year with joy and inner feeling.
