The door swung open and Rabbi Shlomo walked out and began to pace in the waiting room. Suddenly, he loudly exclaimed: "Young man, young man, what will be if indeed there is a G‑d in this world?"

Rabbi Shlomo (1738-1792), Chassidic Rebbe in the town of Karlin, Russia (near Pinsk), was killed in the pogroms which accompanied the Polish uprising against Russia.
In the end, the chassid he decided that he just could not meet the Karliner Rebbe’s demand. He respectfully took leave of the Rebbe and departed for home, but in his heart he felt resentful: how could a tzaddik request so much money for a blessing?
