Shammai & Hillel, Houses of : The Torah academies founded by Hillel and Shammai were known as the “Houses of Hillel and Shammai.” The Mishnah records 316 disagreements between the schools, with the House of Hillel generally taking the lenient view and the House of Shammai, the more stringent one. In all but 18 cases, the halachah is accordance with the House of Hillel.
