Chana Sharfstein, an expert on Scandinavian Jewish history, is a noted author, educator and tour guide. Raised and educated in Stockholm, Sweden, Chana is a retired member of the New York City school system, and a docent at the Museum of Jewish Heritage and the Center of Jewish History.
In 1964 this condition was virtually unknown, still in its infancy. I was overwhelmed, and unsure of how I would cope.

The Rebbe’s words on retirement
The Rebbe asked about my uncle. I responded by saying that he was well, thank G‑d, and had just retired. The Rebbe shook his head. In Yiddish, he said, “Retired—what does that mean?”
To my great surprise, the Rebbe asked me about my very personal plans, about my dating to get married.
We were supposed to be back home in New York by now, but a heavy snowfall there made it impossible for any planes to land...
It was raining very, very hard. I would never have gone out, but it was the final day to pay some bills and I had to get to the bank.

In 1972, Mrs. Chana Sharfstein wrote a term paper about the Lubavitch movement for her sociology class at Brooklyn College. After receiving an A, she gave it to the Rebbe, who returned it to her with two pages of corrections in his own handwriting.

Mrs. Chana Sharfstein recalls one of her first private audiences with the Rebbe, as a young woman in her early twenties, when the Rebbe asked her about her prospects for marriage (1954).
It was just a postcard with a simple message, but to me it was a wonderful Chanukah present
