39 Melachot (Categories of Creative Work): These are the 39 categories of creative activity that were necessary for the construction of the Tabernacle in the desert. As G-d commanded that the construction be suspended on Shabbat, these activities determine what is considered "creation" and therefore prohibited on Shabbat -- when we abstain from creative activity, and not necessarily from exertion.
