Brit Milah; Circumcision: (lit. "covenant of circumcision"); the ritual circumcision of a Jewish boy, generally at eight days old
The beggar blessed me that the barrel would not run out until the final feast celebrating my youngest son’s wedding.
They rested and grazed, and after a day or two, the rancher prodded them along to the fair where, plump and agile, they sold nicely.
I first met the family some seven years ago, when I was called to perform a bris on their newborn son.
“I have three very strong horses, fast as deer,” he whispered. “If you’re willing to pay, I’ll take the innkeeper and his family to a city far from here. Tonight.”
“Please invite the wagon driver to come see me,” said the Rebbe upon hearing that the man was in town.
Late in the afternoon, the Rebbe emerged from his room and instructed that the circumcision commence. The only clue to his delay was the mysterious sentence that passed his lips, "Ay... the Polotzk burial society..."
