Nineveh, Capital of Assyria

Sort by:
Nineveh, Capital of Assyria: The prophet Jonah, in approximately 650 BCE, describes Nineveh as being "an exceedingly great city, a walk of three days" and having 220,000 inhabitants. Jonah was sent there to prophetically foretell the city's imminent destruction, due to its inhabitants’ evil ways. The people of Nineveh repented and the city was spared—as is recounted in the Book of Jonah, which is read on Yom Kippur.
