Daniel: (a) (c. 400 BCE) Together with Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah, was exiled to Babylon and trained to be a chamberlain in the royal court. After successfully interpreting Nebuchadnezzar's dream, he was appointed to a high government position. During the reign of Belshazzar, Daniel deciphered writing that mysteriously appeared, predicting Babylon's downfall. He was thrown into a lions' den during Darius’ reign for praying to G-d; miraculously, he wasn’t harmed. (b) A common Jewish name.
