Haman: Jew-hating descendant of Amalek, appointed by King Ahasuerus to be prime minister of the Persian Empire. He plotted to annihilate the Jews, but was thwarted by Mordecai and Esther. At Ahasuerus' behest, he was hanged, as described in the Scroll of Esther which is read every year on Purim.
