Abner ben Ner: (d. circa 872 BCE) General of Saul's army. After Saul's death he proclaimed Ish Bosheth king. Later, realizing that Ish Bosheth's rule could not last, he negotiated a peace agreement with Ish Bosheth's rival, David—but was treacherously killed by Joab. David repudiated the murder and ordered all of Israel to mourn Abner's death.
