| 16God spoke to Moses, saying: |

טזוַיְדַבֵּ֥ר יְהֹוָ֖ה אֶל־משֶׁ֥ה לֵּאמֹֽר: |
| 17“The following are the names of the men who must assume possession of the land on your behalf under the leadership of Eleazar the priest and Joshua son of Nun. |
|
יזאֵ֚לֶּה שְׁמ֣וֹת הָֽאֲנָשִׁ֔ים אֲשֶׁר־יִנְחֲל֥וּ לָכֶ֖ם אֶת־הָאָ֑רֶץ אֶלְעָזָר֙ הַכֹּהֵ֔ן וִֽיהוֹשֻׁ֖ע֙ בִּן־נֽוּן: |
| אֲשֶׁר־יִנְחֲלוּ לָכֶם - Who must assume possession (lit.) to you - i.e., for you. Each prince is the agent responsible for his tribe and will divide the inheritance of the tribe to its families and to its men. He will choose for each one a portion appropriate for its needs, and whatever the princes do will be considered done as though the tribes had made them their representatives. It is not possible to explain this לָכֶם in the same sense as every other לָכֶם in Scripture, for if so, it should have said יַנְחִילוּ לָכֶם. However יִנְחֲלוּ implies that they inherit for you and on your behalf, as in: ה׳ יִלָּחֵם לָכֶם “God will do battle for you.” |

אֲשֶׁר־יִנְחֲלוּ לָכֶם.
בִּשְׁבִילְכֶם; כָּל נָשִׂיא וְנָשִׂיא אַפּוֹטְרוֹפּוֹס לְשִׁבְטוֹ וּמְחַלֵּק נַחֲלַת הַשֵּׁבֶט לַמִּשְׁפָּחוֹת וְלַגְּבָרִים, וּבוֹרֵר לְכָל אֶחָד וְאֶחָד חֵלֶק הָגוּן, וּמַה שֶּׁהֵם עוֹשִׂים יִהְיֶה עָשׂוּי כְּאִלּוּ עֲשָׂאוּם שְׁלוּחִים; וְלֹא יִתָּכֵן לְפָרֵשׁ לכם זֶה כְּכָל לָכֶם שֶׁבַּמִּקְרָא, שֶׁאִם כֵּן הָיָה לוֹ לִכְתֹּב יַנְחִילוּ לָכֶם, יִנְחֲלוּ מַשְׁמַע שֶׁהֵם נוֹחֲלִים לָכֶם — בִּשְׁבִילְכֶם וּבִמְקוֹמְכֶם, כְּמוֹ "ה' יִלָּחֵם לָכֶם" (שמות י"ד):

| 18You must take one prince from each tribe to assume possession of the land. |
|
יחוְנָשִׂ֥יא אֶחָ֛ד נָשִׂ֥יא אֶחָ֖ד מִמַּטֶּ֑ה תִּקְח֖וּ לִנְחֹ֥ל אֶת־הָאָֽרֶץ: |
| לִנְחֹל אֶת־הָאָֽרֶץ - To assume possession of the land - i.e., that he inherit it and divide it up in your stead. |

לִנְחֹל אֶת־הָאָֽרֶץ.
שֶׁיְּהֵא נוֹחֵל וְחוֹלֵק אוֹתָהּ בִּמְקוֹמְכֶם:

| 19These are the names of the men: For the tribe of Judah, Caleb son of Yefuneh. |
|
יטוְאֵ֖לֶּה שְׁמ֣וֹת הָֽאֲנָשִׁ֑ים לְמַטֵּ֣ה יְהוּדָ֔ה כָּלֵ֖ב בֶּן־יְפֻנֶּֽה: |
| 20For the tribe of the descendants of Simeon, Shemu’el son of Amihud. |
|
כוּלְמַטֵּה֨ בְּנֵ֣י שִׁמְע֔וֹן שְׁמוּאֵ֖ל בֶּן־עַמִּיהֽוּד: |
| 21For the tribe of Benjamin, Elidad son of Kislon. |
|
כאלְמַטֵּ֣ה בִנְיָמִ֔ן אֱלִידָ֖ד בֶּן־כִּסְלֽוֹן: |
| 22The prince for the tribe of the descendants of Dan, Buki son of Yogli. |
|
כבוּלְמַטֵּ֥ה בְנֵי־דָ֖ן נָשִׂ֑יא בֻּקִּ֖י בֶּן־יָגְלִֽי: |
| 23For the descendants of Joseph: the prince for the tribe of the descendants of Manasseh, Chani’el son of Efod; |
|
כגלִבְנֵ֣י יוֹסֵ֔ף לְמַטֵּ֥ה בְנֵֽי־מְנַשֶּׁ֖ה נָשִׂ֑יא חַנִּיאֵ֖ל בֶּן־אֵפֹֽד: |
| 24and the prince for the tribe of the descendants of Ephraim, Kemu’el son of Shiftan. |
|
כדוּלְמַטֵּ֥ה בְנֵֽי־אֶפְרַ֖יִם נָשִׂ֑יא קְמוּאֵ֖ל בֶּן־שִׁפְטָֽן: |
| 25The prince for the tribe of the descendants of Zebulun, Elitzafan son of Parnach. |
|
כהוּלְמַטֵּ֥ה בְנֵֽי־זְבוּלֻ֖ן נָשִׂ֑יא אֱלִֽיצָפָ֖ן בֶּן־פַּרְנָֽךְ: |
| 26The prince for the tribe of the descendants of Issachar, Palti’el son of Azan. |
|
כווּלְמַטֵּ֥ה בְנֵֽי־יִשָּׂשכָ֖ר נָשִׂ֑יא פַּלְטִיאֵ֖ל בֶּן־עַזָּֽן: |
| 27The prince for the tribe of the descendants of Asher, Achihud son of Shelomi. |
|
כזוּלְמַטֵּ֥ה בְנֵֽי־אָשֵׁ֖ר נָשִׂ֑יא אֲחִיה֖וּד בֶּן־שְׁלֹמִֽי: |
| 28The prince for the tribe of the descendants of Naphtali, Pedah’el son of Amihud. |
|
כחוּלְמַטֵּ֥ה בְנֵֽי־נַפְתָּלִ֖י נָשִׂ֑יא פְּדַהְאֵ֖ל בֶּן־עַמִּיהֽוּד: |
| 29These are the ones whom God commanded to assign the Israelites their estates in Canaan.” |

כטאֵ֕לֶּה אֲשֶׁ֖ר צִוָּ֣ה יְהֹוָ֑ה לְנַחֵ֥ל אֶת־בְּנֵֽי־יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל בְּאֶ֥רֶץ כְּנָֽעַן: |
| לְנַחֵל אֶת־בְּנֵֽי־יִשְׂרָאֵל - To assign the Israelites their estates - i.e., that they apportion it to them according to its prescribed divisions. |
|
לְנַחֵל אֶת־בְּנֵֽי־יִשְׂרָאֵל.
שֶׁהֵם יַנְחִילוּ אוֹתָהּ לָכֶם לְמַחְלְקוֹתֶיהָ:
