It is twilight—a time when day and night overlap. The earth is personified and is "opening its mouth" like a dark hole with mysterious depth. This mouth of the earth which opened to swallow Korach and his followers is one of ten things created at twilight on the eve of the first Shabbat (Pirkei Avot 5:8). Looking closely into the black space in the center of the painting, one can also decipher the face of a donkey. The mouth of Balaam's talking donkey was another of the ten things created in the golden dusk of the sixth day just before Shabbat.
