Deceased Congressman Witnessed Rebirth of Russian Jewish Community

Tom Lantos, the longtime Democratic congressman from California who died this month at the age 80, was remembered worldwide as a champion of Russian Jewry and a steadfast supporter of the American Jewish community. A Holocaust survivor, the Hungarian-born politician visited Moscow’s Jewish community center last year as chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee.

In his entry in the guestbook of Moscow’s famed Marina Roshzta Jewish Community Center, U.S. Rep. Tom Lantos of California praised the rebirth of Russian Jewry. The chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee sat down with Russian Chief Rabbi Berel Lazar, a Chabad-Lubavitch emissary, in 2007 to discuss the country’s support of its Jewish citizens. Lantos died earlier this month.
