Longmont, Colo.’s Jewish community turned out for a unique haircutting ritual this month, made all the more special considering that two young boys were undergoing their first haircuts instead of just one.

On June 12, Meir Borenstein and Elan Barkenbus, who had just turned three, celebrated their upshernish, an ancient Jewish custom rooted in the Torah command to leave a tree’s fruits untouched for its first three years.

Borenstein’s father, Chabad-Lubavitch Rabbi Yakov Borenstein, co-director of the Chabad Jewish Center of Longmont, told the Longmont Times-Call that the custom is “an unbelievable milestone” in a child’s life. …
