Alexander Sagan, chairman of Ukraine’s State Committee on Ethnic and Religious Affairs, told the country’s chief rabbi, Rabbi Azriel Chaikin, that a legal mechanism is being developed for the return of Jewish community Torah scrolls that were seized by state authorities last year.

When told of a bill introduced by deputy legislator Alexander Fedlman, Chaikin, a Chabad-Lubavitch emissary living in Kiev, said: “At last, such a legal act may effectively resolve this sensitive issue.”

The meeting this week was Sagan’s first introduction to Chaikin since assuming the religious affairs office; the pair also discussed a recent spike in anti-Semitic attacks in the country. …
