Turning Stone Resort has gone the kosher route, installing $250,000 of new equipment and leaving no stone unturned – and un-scrubbed – in one of its kitchens. Under the supervision of Rabbi Yaakov Rapaport, the long-time co-director of Chabad-Lubavitch of Syracuse, the new kitchen will cater to events held in a designated kosher dining area.

The upstate New York resort, an enterprise of the Oneida Indian Nation, employs some 5,000 people, and is hoping to attract kosher-observant weddings, banquets and conventions.

Rapaport, who has lived in nearby Syracuse for more than 28 years, said the new facility, which will be locked when not in use to prevent contamination of its kosher status, will bring a new awareness of the observance of Jewish dietary laws.

"We hope that now we will be able to encourage more kosher events from the Jewish community here," said the rabbi. "We also hope that this will bring a greater knowledge of kosher to the local Jewish community. The Jewish community is most definitely excited about this."
