For those braving the snow, sleet and freezing rain, it’s hard to imagine that in some parts of the world, people are out and about, taking in summer and all of its sundry activities.

In Australia, more than 100 boys and girls just completed two weeks of Gan Izzy Day Camp, run by Chabad Youth NSW. The program included all kinds of activities, such as rock-climbing, inline skating and canoeing; trips to a trampoline park and a play center; daily study and prayer sessions; and more.

Teen boys also just finished up a session of their own in the past few weeks, where they dove into jet-boating, kayaking and laser tag, among other outdoor adventures and trips.

“Throughout the year, children learn in formal ways,” explains Rabbi Elimelech Levy, director of Creative Jewish Education for Youth and Families, an initiative of the Yeshiva Centre Chabad NSW Headquarters in Bondi. “But camp has a magical way of making everything so much more fun and easy. The kids come out knowing all kinds of things that they picked up by just being in the camp environment—things that are not learned in school all year round.”

One mother, he reported, was so excited by her children’s experiences that she immediately asked about booking them for the next summer program.

The campers—106 of them, to be exact—were cared for by students of the Yeshiva Gedola Rabbinical College of Sydney, as well as current and former students of the Yeshiva Girls High School, also in Sydney.
